The Surgical Oncology Department at MD Anderson's Cancer Center offers seven specialties (Acute Care Surgical Oncology & General Surgery, Endocrine surgery, Gastric-peritoneal surface surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery, Melanoma surgery, Pediatric surgery, Sarcoma surgery). Providers assess, plan treatment, and deliver surgical services with goals to improve survival, shorten recovery, maximize quality of life, and minimize treatment-related side effects.
OverviewPosition:
Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) in GI Surgical Oncology OR/Vascular – Outpatient.
Salary Range:
Minimum $117,500;
Midpoint $146,500;
Maximum $176,500.
- Patient Care:
Collaborate with physicians and the clinical team to manage patients in one or more department areas (GI, Melanoma, Sarcoma, Endocrine, Port Clinic, Breast Cancer). Demonstrate population-based competencies across the continuum of care. Perform history and physical assessments and collaborate with physicians to prescribe tests, interpret results, and provide appropriate treatment. - Practice Autonomy:
Optimize practice autonomy within professional scope while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team in assigned areas. - Outpatient Clinic:
Manage new patients, follow-up patients, post‑op patients, survivorship, and surveillance in collaboration with the physician and clinic team. - Operating Room:
Assist in surgery as allowed by certification and scope; perform pre-operative assessments, evaluate post-operative status, interpret tests, and prescribe appropriate treatment. - Inpatient Care:
Manage inpatients during hospitalization and post-surgery in collaboration with the clinical team; participate in evaluation and management of patients referred for surgical consults.
- Medical Knowledge:
Demonstrate medical knowledge of the care of Surgical Oncology patients and develop proficiency in necessary skills for their practice area. Engage in ongoing learning and share knowledge with staff and trainees. Participate in discovery/research efforts to improve patient outcomes. - Professionalism:
Commit to collaborative professional relationships; adhere to professional regulations and institutional guidelines; pursue ongoing professional development. - Practice-Based Learning:
Engage in ongoing learning and professional development; apply new knowledge to enhance practice and patient outcomes; develop personal and team leadership competencies. - System-Based Practice:
Assess and improve practice through quality improvement initiatives; apply leadership skills to enhance practice and patient outcomes.
Required:
Master’s Degree from an Accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), or for PAs who graduated before 2013. A degree may be waived if the applicant has recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must align with the clinical practice area and patient population.

PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (if working in Pediatric department). Upon Hire. - May be required:
Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing (upon hire). - Preferred: ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support; PALS as required by patient care area.
