Job Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24‑hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care provided in the designated areas. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration, participates in committees, and represents the unit and nursing in a positive manner. The position assists with developing and implementing performance initiatives, ensuring optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction.

It demonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking through self‑direction, initiative, effective interpersonal skills, and oral/written communication skills.

The manager position responsibilities include managing daily work activities of the unit staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency while assisting management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. The role also provides guidance to staff, is responsible for staffing, budget compliance, and contributes to staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on performance, and assists in development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment.

It implements training, monitoring, and operations initiatives that secure compliance with ethical and legal practices and accreditation, regulatory, and government regulations.

Exempt

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing

• Three years’ experience in nursing, one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare. For HM internal, two years of nursing experience which includes HM performance that demonstrates leadership abilities, i.e., charge nurse responsibilities.

• RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing & PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency).
• BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association.
• Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification (ANCC) within 1 year.

• ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA). As required by department.
• NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA). As required by department.
• NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI). As required by department.

• Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
• Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions.
• Effective communication through a variety of channels with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers.
