Job Overview

Full-Time Day Shift‑Medical Center

At Houston Methodist, the Clinical Resource Nurse is a population‑specific clinician and patient/client advocate who assists patients and families in navigating the complex health‑care system in an organized, effective, and efficient manner across the variety of hospital programs. The role supports standardization and efficiency of care for patients in the assigned service line/unit throughout the continuum of patient care. The Clinical Resource Nurse models patient‑centered care and assumes leadership responsibilities, contributing to direct patient interaction, unit and service line operations, and organization‑wide initiatives.

This position also assists management with program education coordination and overall service line growth, while leading unit and shared governance activities, assessing practice improvement opportunities, and serving as a clinical resource for staff and evaluating cost and outcome data.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Resource Nurse interaction with patients, staff, and the interprofessional team includes education, advocacy, and coordination to ensure smooth patient flow, high quality care, and patient satisfaction. Key responsibilities involve: reporting on outcomes, coaching staff, managing patient education, providing resource coordination, and leading quality improvement initiatives.

Essential Functions People Essential Functions
  • Builds strong relationships with physicians and health‑care providers to assure effective communication in patient care.
  • Serves as liaison between ancillary departments, clinicians, physicians, and patients to ensure efficient patient flow for service line patients.
  • Functions as a subject‑matter expert consultant to interprofessional team members through advanced assessment skills; develops educational information for nursing units; coaches colleagues by articulating decision rationale.
  • Serves as a patient advocate in preventing and resolving ethical issues; facilitates spiritual interventions to relieve patient/family distress.
  • Contributes to improving nurse satisfaction and engagement by modeling and coaching communication skills, and supporting teamwork with RNs, non‑licensed, and interprofessional staff—measured through annual RN‑RN teamwork and interprofessional relationship scores.
Service Essential Functions
  • Coordinates patient care and development into the population‑specific program via personalized interaction.
  • Directly educates patients and families on disease‑specific guidelines and treatment options, facilitating patient‑led decisions.
  • Develops and delivers informational/educational resources and programs related to service line services, teaching nursing care principles and advanced technical knowledge to staff and external groups.
  • Drives department activities to improve unit‑based patient satisfaction scorecards through peer‑to‑peer accountability.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
  • Actively participates in performance‑improvement activities, leading improvements in patient safety processes at unit or service line level.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for complex patient care situations, leading interprofessional teams in implementing care plans.
  • Contributes to development and monitoring of service line, hospital standards and guidelines, ensuring compliance with core measures and appropriate data collection and submission.
Finance Essential Functions
  • Implements department strategies to achieve financial targets on unit‑based scorecards, mentoring others through efficient documentation, length‑of‑stay reduction, and optimal resource use.
  • Participates in decisions impacting operational and capital needs as appropriate.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
  • Leads and identifies opportunities for practice changes; facilitates educational programs for providers, patients, families, or community groups.
  • Attends workshops and educational programs to stay current; submits abstracts to national conferences; incorporates evidence‑based practices into shared governance and leadership.
