Position:
Registered Nurse (RN) PRN Emergency Services at Houston Methodist.

Role:
Licensed staff nurse functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model, providing professional nursing care to a diverse patient population. Responsibilities include nursing assessments, exams and treatment assistance, patient education, and meticulous maintenance of medical records. Provides direct patient care efficiently, including patients with varied and complex needs. Collaborates with physicians and interprofessional team to facilitate compassionate, efficient, and quality care.

Demonstrates clinical competence, uses technology, administers medications, performs procedures, and manages emergencies. Acts as a patient and family advocate, upholding patient rights. Assumes leadership roles such as charge nurse or preceptor and contributes to unit and hospital-wide initiatives.

• Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section

• Two years registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment

• RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing, PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency)
• BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association
• ACL4 – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association
• PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association – within 4 months
• NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) – American Heart Association – within 4 months
• NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) – Crisis Prevention Institute – within 4 months

• Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification
• ENPC – Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification (ENA)
• TNCC – Trauma Nursing Core Course or Instructor (ENA)

• Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations as defined in orientation checklist and annual departmental competency checklist
• Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
• Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members and co‑workers in a customer‑service focus and positive language principles
• Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components
• Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, and patients and families
• Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
• Demonstrates proficient time‑management skills

• Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team and to collaborate on the plan of care.
• Contributes to teamwork by awareness of overall unit acuity, offering assistance and responding positively to requests. Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment. Seeks guidance from and offers guidance to the interprofessional health care team when appropriate, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes.
