Advanced Practice Provider; APRN or PA - Surgical Oncology

Overview

The Surgical Oncology Department at MD Anderson's Cancer Center offers seven specialties:
Acute Care Surgical Oncology & General Surgery, Endocrine surgery, Gastric-peritoneal surface surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery, Melanoma surgery, Pediatric surgery, and Sarcoma surgery. Providers in these specialties assess, plan treatment, and provide surgical services to patients with the goals of improving survival, shortening recovery, maximizing quality of life, and minimizing treatment-related side effects.

Patient Care:
Collaborate with physicians and the clinical team to manage patients in one or multiple areas of the department (GI, Melanoma, Sarcoma, Endocrine, Port Clinic, Breast Cancer). Employee will demonstrate population-based competencies across the continuum of care. Employee performs history and physical assessment and collaborates with physicians to prescribe tests, interpret results, and provide appropriate treatment. The employee will optimize practice autonomy within their professional scope while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team in their assigned areas.

Outpatient Clinic APP:
Employee assigned to outpatient clinic will manage new patients, follow-up patients, post‑op patients, survivorship, and surveillance patients in collaboration with physicians and the clinic team.

Operating Room:
Employee with operating room privileges and responsibilities will assist in surgery as allowed by certification and scope. Employee will perform pre‑operative assessments and evaluate immediate post‑operative status as well as interpret tests and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Inpatient Care:
Employee assigned to inpatient care will manage patients during hospitalization and post‑surgery in collaboration with the clinical team. Employee will participate in evaluation and management of patients referred for surgical consults.

Employee demonstrates medical knowledge of the care of Surgical Oncology patients. Employee will develop and demonstrate proficiency in the skills necessary for care of patients in their practice area. Employee will engage in ongoing learning opportunities and share knowledge and expertise with other staff and trainees. Employee will engage in and promote the institution's discovery/research efforts to improve patient outcomes.

Employee demonstrates commitment to collaborative professional relationships with physicians and all members of the health care team. Employee abides by professional regulatory and institutional guidelines for practice, documentation, professional charges, professional practice and behaviors.   Master’s Degree in Nursing.

  Doctorate in Nursing Practice.
• Degree may be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
• Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Required:
