The overall purpose of the Certified Medication Aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to patients/residents. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. The position also requires routine daily tasks for maintaining the health, comfort, and well‑being of patients/residents.

- State certification as a Nursing Assistant mandatory.
- State approved medication administration certification (where required).
- Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
- Administers medications ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the "five rights" of medication administration.
- May take and record vital signs of patients/residents as assigned or required by certain medications.
- Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately.
- Observes for and reports medication reactions or side effects to a licensed nurse or appropriate shift supervisor.
- Administers PRN medications according to state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Documents reasons for and responses to PRN medications in a timely manner.
- May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed (or charge) nurse per facility policy.
- Secures medication carts/medication rooms per state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Attends facility education in‑services.
- May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift.
- May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse.
- Ensures medication room, med carts and medication refrigerators are clean and well organized.
- Ensures expired medications are removed for destruction per policy and procedures.
- Attends Quality Assurance meetings as requested.
- Functions as a Team Leader/Role Model.
- Has reviewed Cantex Continuing Care Networks Clinical Policies and Procedures for Abuse Prevention and knows the employee's responsibility to enforce it.
- Responsible for ensuring patient/resident safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
