Within UT MD Anderson, the Neurosurgery department provides coordinated, comprehensive, and optimal care while advancing the elimination of brain, spine, and skull base tumors through expert clinical care, pioneering research, education, and outreach.

The Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider plays a vital role in delivering high-quality care across the neurosurgical continuum. The Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider supports complex inpatient and outpatient populations through clinical management, care coordination, and patient education. The Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider also contributes to research, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary care initiatives that enhance patient outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have at least one year of advanced practice experience with a background in neurology, neurosurgery, and/or neuro-oncology. Preference is given to candidates with neurosurgery or neuro-oncology experience and appropriate advanced practice licensure and certification for clinical practice.

Work Schedule:

Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. There is an opportunity, after a 3-month orientation, to have administrative time that can be done remotely. No weekends

Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Care:
The Neurosurgery APP impacts quality of patient care and patient outcomes throughout the care continuum and are responsible for the clinical management and coordination of care for complex Neurosurgery outpatients. The APP is responsible for conducting comprehensive history and physicals, developing plans of care, writing orders, coordination and scheduling of surgical procedures, securing consents, prescribing medications, patient education, and requesting consultations from multidisciplinary team members to meet patients' multiple needs and requests.

The APP is responsible for the timely and efficient detection, documentation, and management of significant changes in the Neurosurgical patient's condition and can meet and verbalize the needs of patients in their demands and experiences of an illness.

2. Procedures:
The APP assists neurosurgeons with procedures such as Gamma Knife stereotactic head frame placement and suture removal. The APP evaluates and reprograms ventriculoperitoneal and lumboperitoneal shunts.

3. APP Managed Clinics and Programs:
The Neurosurgery APP manages clinics such as ventriculoperitoneal shunt check clinic and Neurosurgery survivorship clinics. The APP assesses tumor survivors for late and long-term effects of treatment to include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal treatments, immunotherapy, and new targeted therapies. The APP participates in health screening, counseling, promotion, and provides referrals to programs for smoking cessation, weight management, physical activity, sexual rehabilitation, and other lifestyle habits.
