Primary Purpose

The 1:1 Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) for Special Education supports the educational program by providing direct nursing care and health‑related services to an assigned student with specialized medical needs as determined through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process. Working under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act, the LVN assists in implementing the student’s Individualized Health Care Plan (IHP), physician orders, and emergency care plans to promote student health, safety, and educational access.

When the assigned student is absent, the LVN may be assigned to provide support in a campus clinic, assisting with routine health services and medication administration within the LVN scope of practice.

Qualifications
  • Current Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license
  • Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing
  • Current CPR/AED Certification
Preferred Qualifications
  • School nursing experience
  • Experience working with medically fragile children
  • Experience in pediatric, hospital, or home health settings
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Ability to safely lift, transfer, and position students
  • Ability to respond effectively during emergencies
  • Knowledge of common pediatric health conditions
  • Knowledge of the Texas Nurse Practice Act applicable to LVNs
  • Ability to implement physician orders under RN supervision
  • Ability to perform specialized nursing procedures within LVN scope of practice
  • Ability to maintain confidential records
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to document accurately
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health deficits
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures
  • Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening
Major Responsibilities and Duties Direct Nursing Care (1:1 Assignment)
  • Provide individualized nursing care according to physician orders, the Individualized Health Care Plan (IHP), Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and ARD/IEP.
  • Monitor student health status throughout the instructional day.
  • Perform nursing procedures within the LVN scope of practice, including but not limited to: medication administration, tube feedings, catheterization, seizure monitoring, suctioning, tracheostomy care, and oxygen administration.
  • Assist with mobility, transfers, positioning, toileting, feeding, and personal care as required.
  • Accompany the assigned student during transportation and school‑sponsored activities when required.
  • Observe and report changes in student condition to the supervising RN and Director of Nursing & Health Services.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
Documentation
  • Maintain accurate nursing documentation.
  • Record medications, treatments, observations, and interventions.
  • Report suspected abuse/neglect according to state law and district policy.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, and district policy.
Floating / Clinic Support Responsibilities
  • Assist campus clinic personnel with routine student care, medication administration, daily clinic operations, documentation, health screenings, and immunization record reviews.
