Job Summary

Provide temporary assistance to the veterinary staff in the documentation and triage of all laboratory animal health cases in a colony of nonhuman primates. Assist the Laboratory technologists in the documentation and management of all processing events and other related activities

This is an onsite role in Houston, TX. The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $20.00 per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.

Position is open to anyone, regardless of age, who meets the educational and experience requirements as posted.

Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Student has completed first year of school and lecture classes of a collegiate veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Training Activities or equivalent program in veterinary technology or is currently enrolled in an Undergrad degree program. GPA Requirement:
Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible

Experience:

0-1 year's related experience working with animals in a laboratory or clinical setting.

* Under the supervision of a veterinary staff, perform routine veterinary technical and husbandry skills including the following:

* Administration of various therapeutic measures by IV, IM, SQ, topical, oral routes, etc.

* Bandage/wrapping techniques.

* Routine parasitological testing.

* Venipuncture techniques.

* TB testing including reading and recording results.

* Simple dental extractions.

* Proficient animal restraint techniques.

* Monitor critical care animals (i.e., place IVs, monitor fluids, etc.).

* Perform animal follow-up observations or new findings as required.

* Monitor animal health, visually, and by following detailed schedules.

* Generate animal treatment records and perform and track follow-ups.

* Perform technical duties associated with processing events such as administration of various therapeutic agents using different modes of administration (, IM, SQ, PO...), venipuncture techniques and other tasks as appropriate.

* Collect samples for references labs as well as in house lab. This includes, but is not limited to blood collection, rectal swabs, and blood smears.

* Prepare sample collection tubes as needed according to schedule, and receive, arrange, process and track test samples.

* Pre-draw medications as required according to schedule.

* Assist in packing/shipping of samples and/or animals to customers, as needed.

* Cleaning and maintenance of laboratory, equipment, and related areas.

* Assist in maintaining accurate record keeping procedures for the veterinary department.

* Assist in keeping inventory and stocking the vet and lab rooms (i.e., drugs and supplies). Assist in organizing and maintaining the vet exam rooms.

* Assist in taking radiographs

* Assist with tissue sampling, routine necropsies, routine animal manipulations and administration of fluids or other treatments as required.

* May perform routine technical and husbandry functions (general housekeeping) on studies and must adhere to safety procedures.

* Perform all other related duties as assigned. Perform all tasks related to the internship.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

* Must regularly move equipment and materials weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally move equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
