TITLE: Temporary Professional (Field Botanist)

CLASSIFICATION: Temporary/Seasonal (non-benefits eligible)

AGENCY: Environmental Institute of Houston (EIH)

The Environmental Institute of Houston (EIH) at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) is conducting the National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA). We are currently recruiting a full-time seasonal (18-week duration) field botanist. This individual must demonstrate strong wetland botanical taxonomic field experience that will complement existing staff and be able to travel and perform primarily field-based work in harsh environments in the Texas summer heat.

All work will be based out of Houston, Texas, but extensive travel is required to conduct state-wide field work. A successful candidate will act as the taxonomic expert for wetland vegetation surveys, be comfortable leading small groups of junior staff, be able to follow strict and detailed procedures, and organize and voucher specimens according to project specific field operation protocols.

LOCATION: Based in Houston, Texas; includes state-wide overnight travel

SALARY: Range: $3,000-$5,000/month (commensurate with experience; full-time, non-benefits eligible); travel expenses during field work covered by grant funds (relocation expenses not provided)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants should be pursuing or possess a Bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, environmental science or a closely related field. Applicants must be willing to travel but are required to have lodging in the Houston area for office-based activities between sampling trips. Additionally, the successful candidates will:

Required
  • Have two or more years of relevant work experience (as a wetland ecologist, botanist, or related)
  • Work and/or educational experience should include training in Texas wetland plant identification
  • Proficiency using dichotomous keys and plant presses
  • Availability for overnight travel (up to 14 consecutive days) throughout the position duration (including weekends) while working long hours (10+) in the field during high-heat, summer months
  • Be in good physical condition and able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to traverse steep and rough terrain and comfortable working from a boat, canoe or kayak
  • Possess a positive attitude and willingness to work independently and as a member of a team
Preferred
  • Master’s degree or higher
  • Wetland delineation experience, especially related to plant identification
  • Taxonomic expertise in wetland plants of Texas, especially inland or freshwater
  • Experience driving/trailering small vessels/trailers over long distances
Additional Notes

All applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and be physically able to drive university vehicles. Applicants must pass a criminal background and motor vehicle background checks prior to hire. This is not a benefits eligible position and continued employment beyond the 18-week restriction is dependent on available grant funds.
