It is the responsibility of the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Veterinary Technician to provide quality and compassionate care to all GCVS patients. They are responsible for all technical aspects of patient exams including but not limited to coordinating with clients and other members of the hospital, and performing imaging, phlebotomy, sedation, restraint, and other treatments or procedures. Additional duties include exam and diagnostics coordination, medical record keeping, sample collection, inventory, and aseptic control.
They must have good communication skills with hospital staff and clients to perform delegated tasks and produce quality results. This position requires a dependable, high-energy person who can handle multiple tasks at one time as well as a high stress, fast pace environment.
- Provide patient restraint during procedures and examinations
- Prepare equipment and medications as directed by veterinarian
- Prepare, maintain, and clean specialty equipment and procedure areas
- Knowledge of veterinary anatomy and physiology
- Knowledge of basic drug usages, generic and brand names, possible side effects/reactions
- Knowledge of medical math. Ability to calculate and prepare drug dosages.
- Obtain baseline vitals.
- Assist the veterinarian with exams, treatments, and procedures.
- Proficient in venipuncture and intravenous catheter placement
- Administer oral, topical, ocular, SQ, IM, and IV medications
- Ability to monitor sedated patients and recognize normal anesthetic parameters
- Monitor patients after sedated procedures to ensure they recover well and report any negative changes to the veterinarian.
- Collect and deliver blood, urine, and tissue samples to lab
- Independently manage outpatient appointments from intake through discharge, including history collection and treatment assistance, while supporting the veterinarian and maintaining efficient clinic flow.
- Provide clients with education regarding medications and discharge instructions
- Build and present treatment estimates, review financial plans with clients, process invoices, and facilitate efficient client checkout.
- Document client communications, treatments and patient responses in the patient records using correct medical terminology in patient records.
- Transport animals to and from other areas of GCVS, including ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients
- Assist in general maintenance of equipment and clinic, including needs specific to the underwater treadmill: daily water quality checks and chemical additions as needed, weekly draining/refilling of water storage tank
- Complete routine cleaning of rehab clinic as needed to maintain a safe and clean work environment, including animal excrement and mopping wet floors
