Veterinarian - Area Chief of Staff

Overview

The Area Chief of Staff leads, develops, and manages associate veterinarians in their hospitals to attract, develop, engage, and retain doctors that deliver quality care and meet hospital performance measures. This role drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) to ensure every pet receives consistent care aligned with Banfield’s six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care.

The Area Chief of Staff partners with the Practice Manager (if applicable) to drive culture and delivery of quality care in their assigned hospitals.

• Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
• Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, and manage controlled substance inventory for relief doctors where required by law.
• Engage and retain doctors by assessing risk, implementing proactive retention strategies, and fostering a culture of community and engagement.
• Provide effective medical leadership to hospital teams, driving an inclusive and collaborative work environment in partnership with practice managers.
• Validate clinical skillsets and alignment with quality standards through medical record reviews, veterinary quality assignments, audits, and patient safety event reviews.
• Deliver veterinary services with time in clinical role as appropriate based on hospital count, reports, and DVQ alignment; this role is 100% hospital-based and considered a working manager.
• Oversee coaching for newly hired veterinarians to ensure engaging experiences that develop clinical, surgical, and dental skills per Banfield quality standards and processes.
• Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent and act as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community.
• Work with associate doctors to achieve productivity goals through high-quality medicine, preventive care, client experience, and team partnership.
• Deliver hospital operations KPIs through leadership and collaboration with practice managers; develop and revise plans to meet KPI targets and OGSM performance.
• Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan for assigned hospital pod.
• Ensure compliance with Banfield’s clinical essentials, regulations, and standards through quality assessments, audits, and reviews; address gaps promptly.
• Champion preventive care culture and drive wellness plan growth and retention.
• Foster a culture of accessible care and superior client service to meet client experience scorecard goals; resolve client complaints related to medical standards of care.
• Manage medical equipment inventory and coordinate equipment requests with the Director of Veterinary Quality.
• Deliver high-quality veterinary care with professionalism and ethics, ensuring exceptional client and pet experiences; establish trust through preventive care, thorough diagnostics, treatment plans, home care instructions, and follow-ups.
