Take Your Equine Medicine Experience Into the Field!
Equine Veterinary Technician / Assistant – Ambulatory
Full-Time | Monday–Friday | Houston, Texas
Are you looking for an opportunity to expand your equine medicine skills, gain more hands-on experience, and work directly alongside an equine veterinarian?
Equine Sports Medicine & Surgery (ESMS) is looking for a motivated Equine Veterinary Technician/Assistant to join our Houston ambulatory team.
This isn't a position where you'll spend your entire day inside a clinic. You'll work one-on-one with an equine veterinarian
, traveling to farms, barns, training facilities, and client locations throughout the Houston area while assisting with the care and treatment of a variety of equine patients.
For someone who already has a strong foundation working with horses and wants to continue developing their skills in equine veterinary medicine, this is an opportunity to learn, contribute, and gain valuable experience in the field.
What Your Day May Look Like- Assist the veterinarian during examinations, treatments, diagnostics, and procedures
- Prepare medications, supplies, equipment, and treatment areas
- Safely handle and restrain horses during veterinary care
- Travel alongside the veterinarian to scheduled ambulatory calls throughout the Houston area
- Keep the veterinary vehicle organized, stocked, clean, and ready for the next call
- Assist with patient and treatment information and other documentation as needed
- Interact professionally with horse owners, trainers, barn managers, and other clients
- Learn to anticipate the veterinarian's needs and help keep a busy ambulatory schedule moving efficiently
This is a hands-on, outdoor, field-based position
. Houston weather can mean heat, humidity, rain, mud, cold mornings, and changing conditions throughout the day.
We're looking for someone who understands that caring for horses means being willing and prepared to work outdoors in varying and sometimes inclement weather conditions when it is safe to do so.
- Have significant hands-on experience working with horses and are confident around them
- Have prior equine veterinary technician/assistant experience or a strong equine background with a desire to grow your veterinary medicine skills
- Want to continue learning and expanding your knowledge of equine medicine
- Enjoy hands‑on work and would rather be out in the field than behind a desk
- Are dependable, punctual, organized, and take initiative
- Can work independently and anticipate what needs to be done
- Are comfortable working closely one-on-one with a veterinarian throughout the day
- Communicate professionally with clients and team members
- Are comfortable traveling between client locations throughout the workday
- Can safely meet the physical demands associated with working around horses and veterinary equipment
- Are willing to work outdoors in Texas weather throughout the year
Prior equine veterinary experience is preferred, but we’re also interested in candidates with extensive equine experience who have the right foundation, work ethic, and desire to further develop their skills in equine veterinary medicine.
What to ExpectFull-Time | Monday–Friday
As with most ambulatory equine medicine, no two days are exactly the same. Daily start and end times may vary based on the veterinarian's schedule, patient needs, travel, weather, and scheduled calls. Weekends and holidays are not required but may be necessary from time to time.
Grow Your Equine Medicine Career with ESMSIf you already have a passion for horses but are ready to take your knowledge further, this position offers the opportunity to work closely with an equine veterinarian, build your hands‑on skills, and experience veterinary medicine where it happens — in the field, with the horse.
