Talen Energy is seeking a Transmission & FTR Market Analyst to support generation portfolio optimization and asset-backed trading within the Commercial Trading team. This role focuses on production cost modeling, congestion analysis, and market forecasting within the PJM Interconnection market.
This position serves as a primary analytical contributor, owning transmission and congestion modeling responsibilities and delivering actionable insights to support trading, risk management, and long-term strategic planning. The role offers high visibility, broad cross-functional interaction, and the opportunity to shape how transmission analytics are leveraged across the organization.
Key Responsibilities- Support congestion modeling to identify risks, opportunities, and optimization strategies for the generation portfolio.
- Perform day-ahead congestion analysis and forecasting using nodal and LMP modeling.
- Analyze congestion exposure related to monthly, annual, and long-term FTR auctions.
- Develop short- and long-term energy market forecasts to support internal views on zonal and nodal basis pricing.
- Translate production cost modeling outputs into clear, actionable recommendations for trading, risk, and leadership teams.
- Maintain, validate, and enhance model input data to ensure accuracy and reliability of production cost models.
- Identify and develop improvements to analytical tools, data workflows, and modeling methodologies.
- Collaborate closely with Operations, Risk, Credit, Accounting, Treasury, and Finance to support enterprise-wide decision making.
- Hands-on experience with production cost modeling and or power flow analysis, typically 1–5 years.
- Experience working with power grid or ISO data to perform analysis within production cost modeling software.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency with production cost modeling tools such as Dayzer, PROMOD, Plexos, Grid View, or GE MAPS.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across front, mid, and back office functions.
- Experience with in an electric utility, Independent Power Producer (IPP), ISO, or power grid-focused organization.
- Familiarity with organized power markets beyond PJM, such as other U.S. regional transmission organizations.
- Advanced technical degree or MBA.
- Programming or data analysis experience using Python, VBA, SQL, or similar tools.
- This role operates with a high degree of ownership and autonomy within the transmission analytics function.
