The Albecker Lab at the University of Houston seeks a reliable, detail-oriented Part-Time Analytical Chemistry / GC–MS Technician to support ongoing research involving chemical analyses of biological samples. This position (up to 20 hours per week) is ideal for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field, or someone with analytical instrumentation experience.
Position OverviewThe technician will be responsible for preparing and running samples on Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) instruments (primarily Agilent platform), performing routine instrument upkeep and preventative maintenance, and supporting associated laboratory tasks. The role will include work with both animal and plant samples and will require attention to procedural accuracy, cleanliness, and documentation. Training on specific protocols will be provided as needed, but familiarity with basic analytical chemistry principles and GC–MS operation is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare biological samples for GC–MS analysis, including extraction, derivatization, and standard preparation.
- Operate GC–MS instruments (e.g., Agilent systems) to run routine and research samples.
- Perform regular instrument maintenance and troubleshooting (e.g., liner changes, septum replacement, cleaning, tuning).
- Monitor and log instrument performance, report anomalies, and coordinate service calls when required.
- Manage consumables, reagents, and sample inventories.
- Document procedures and results accurately according to lab protocols.
- Assist with general lab support tasks as needed.
- Current student or recent graduate in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline.
- Familiarity with analytical instrumentation (GC, MS, GC–MS) and laboratory safety practices.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
- Prior experience with sample prep for instrumental analysis is a plus.
- Experience with both biological matrices (animal/plant tissues) and small molecule analysis is beneficial.
- Part-time, up to 20 hours per week.
- Flexible scheduling coordinated with lab needs and academic commitments.
- Work performed on campus (Houston, TX).
Hourly pay will be competitive with regional laboratory technician and analytical roles, with a range of $22–$28/hr.
EnvironmentThe Albecker Lab fosters a collaborative environment focused on rigorous science, clear communication, and efficient workflow. This part-time role is a unique opportunity to gain hands–on experience with cutting–edge analytical instrumentation in the context of ecological and physiological research.
