Research Investigator - Thoracic Head & Neck

The Research Investigator position within the Thoracic Head & Neck Department supports laboratory-based research focused on thoracic and head and neck malignancies, contributing to both basic and translational science initiatives. The Research Investigator applies technical expertise to coordinate, design, and carry out complex research projects while ensuring laboratory operations, safety, and regulatory compliance are maintained at a high standard. The Research Investigator works closely with Principal Investigators and research teams to support scientific discovery and data integrity.

A master’s degree is preferred, along with experience in experimental design, animal and human tissue research, cell culture techniques, and regulatory compliance. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to manage laboratory operations independently while supporting Principal Investigator priorities and institutional requirements.

Position Information

Salary Range:
Minimum $59,000 – Midpoint $74,000 – Maximum $89,000

Responsibilities Laboratory Operations and Safety
  • Maintain and manage a functional research laboratory
  • Supervise the use of laboratory equipment and monitor shared equipment usage
  • Implement and enforce laboratory safety procedures in accordance with MD Anderson and Environmental Health and Safety guidelines
  • Supervise laboratory personnel safety practices and monitor compliance
  • Attend and complete required annual safety training courses
  • Handle, store, and dispose of radioactive, chemical, and biohazardous materials according to institutional procedures
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for handling and maintaining laboratory equipment
  • Maintain working knowledge of equipment operation and procedure manuals
Research Design and Execution
  • Design, organize, and perform laboratory and research procedures
  • Conduct experiments involving animals and animal or human tissues in accordance with institutional and regulatory guidelines
  • Establish and maintain human and murine cell cultures using rigorous sterile techniques
  • Observe and identify cellular changes using microscopy
  • Perform cell counts and assess cell viability
Regulatory Compliance and Documentation
  • Maintain accurate and detailed experimental records
  • Evaluate and analyze resulting research data
  • Manage Institutional Biosafety Committee and Animal Care and Use Committee registrations
