Job Summary
The Academia and Health Services Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Texas Southern University offers a two-year fellowship to postdoctoral research scientists in natural, public health, or behavioral science. The fellowship provides foundational scientific and career development training necessary for a successful career in academia and health services research. The fellow receives research training and individualized one‑on‑one mentoring from a multidisciplinary team of investigators with social, behavioral, public health, and clinical expertise in minority health and health disparities research.
Opportunities include conducting basic, clinical, social, and/or behavioral research, particularly on maternal‑child health disparities and the multiple factors (individual, social, environmental) that contribute to these disparities. The ideal candidate will have completed a doctoral degree and possess the skills to conduct social, behavioral, or environmental studies, with a desire to pursue an academic career such as an Assistant Professor.
The Postdoctoral Fellow is a highly collaborative, self‑motivated, creative individual who is adaptable to new processes, capable of functioning independently, and interested in maternal health and health disparities topics.
Essential Duties Research Training and Education- Participate in a formalized research training curriculum and seminars
- Complete the university’s teaching certificate program
- Complete research tasks assigned by mentors
- Conduct literature searches and review research topics
- Participate in and present at multidisciplinary journal club meetings
- Prepare and present research findings at local and national conferences
- Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication
- Prepare funding applications, as appropriate to the fellow’s research interests and goals
- Establish a research lab for environmental toxicology analysis (for basic scientists)
- Support teaching and learning in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences through lectures, interactive lessons, and assessments in maternal health‑related topics

EducationPh.D. in Public Health, Environmental Toxicology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Demonstrated skills in computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Office 365)

- Additional training or certification in public health, social determinants of health, or related fields
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish, Asian dialects)
- Routine office environment, sitting or standing in one location most of the time
- Willingness to work flexible hours to meet program needs
- Collaborates closely with direct report to complete assigned research tasks and activities
- Some local travel within the greater Houston area (~10%) expected
