This Research Technician will work in a Core laboratory that provides assistance as part of Metabolism and Phenotyping Core under the Advanced Technology Cores at Baylor College of Medicine. The primary responsibility of the Technician is to perform analysis of mouse metabolic phenotypes under the direct supervision of Core director. A successful candidate should be highly-motivated, well organized, technically capable, and ready to learn new techniques.
Excellent communication and multitasking abilities are required.
This position may require infrequent weekend and after hours work.
The technician will perform duties that includes maintenance of experimental animals, clean satellite room, and complete daily health check up log sheet.
Job Duties- Conduct research experiments including: mouse metabolism analyses, weekly cage changes and room management, daily rodent health checks and molecular analysis of plasma samples.
- Maintain lab stocks and assist with lab maintenance.
- Collect, compile, and analyze data.
- Document results of experiments.
- Interact with Core users providing expertise and service.
- Apply routine research techniques.
- Core space management, organizing freezer space, and maintaining lab equipment.
- Mouse handling and mouse work.
- Follow IACUC guidelines.
- Perform basic analytical assays including ELISA, RIA, calorimetric assays.
- Perform tail vein injection.
- Collect mouse blood and separate plasma.
- Collect mouse tissue.
- Assist Core director during mouse surgery and post-surgery monitoring.
- Perform sterilization.
- Maintain bookkeeping and clear communication with supervisor.
- Perform routine laboratory tests under close supervision.
- Ensure duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality in a timely manner.
- Perform basic analytical tests based on standards and procedures as assigned by the supervisor.
- Maintain a detailed laboratory workbook and record of daily work.
- Collect, analyze, and document experimental results.
- Bachelor’s degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- One year of relevant experience.
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Strong interest in work with mouse colonies, mouse handling, and biochemistry.
- Highly motivated to work in laboratory setup.
- Basic knowledge in Microsoft Excel and data input.
- Well organized and technically capable of learning new techniques.
- 3-5 years of relevant experience is needed to reach higher position levels and achieve additional growth opportunities.
