SummaryThe Michael
E. DeBakey Department of Surgery seeks a highly motivated research Assistant Professor in Vascular Biology to develop and sustain an innovative, externally funded research program focused on the molecular, cellular, and translational mechanisms that regulate vascular health and disease. The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative academic environment, engage in interdisciplinary research initiatives, and mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other trainees.
The candidate is expected to publish in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, compete successfully for extramural funding, and contribute to the educational mission through teaching and service activities. Individuals with expertise in areas such as vascular inflammation, endothelial biology, tissue regeneration, cardiovascular disease, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
Under the direction of the Division of Vascular Surgery, the Vice Chair for Research the successful candidate will establish and lead an independent research program focused on vascular biology and metabolic disease supported by extramural funding.
Job Duties- Collaborate with researchers across departments or at other national or international institutions, and actively search for intra-mural and extra-mural funding opportunities and lead grant applications
- Develop, maintain, and lead a nationally recognized research program focused on vascular biology, vascular pathophysiology, and related translational research areas.
- Design and execute innovative scientific investigations that advance knowledge in the field and contribute to the academic mission of the institution.
- Direct and actively participate in laboratory-based and animal experimental studies, including study design, protocol development, data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings.
- Maintain all required approvals, certifications, and regulatory compliance related to animal care and use, biosafety, and responsible conduct of research.
- Pursue, obtain, and sustain extramural funding from federal, state, foundation, industry, and other appropriate sources sufficient to support your research program.
- Submit competitive grant applications on a regular basis and demonstrate a continued commitment to developing an externally funded research portfolio.
- Produce high-quality scholarly work and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, invited lectures, and participation in national and international scientific meetings.
- Mentor and guide graduate students and postdoctoral associates in their research and professional development.
- Participate in relevant college and departmental educational program activities, including graduate and undergraduate training and education, and including your attending lectures, conferences, grand rounds, surgical simulation lab activities, as relevant to the position.
- Applicants should have a PhD and/or MD degree.
- Applicants should currently hold the rank of postdoctoral fellow, research associate, instructor or assistant professor.
- Strong publication record in areas related but not limited to vascular biology and metabolic disease, macrophage development, atherosclerosis, inflammatory disease pathology, and therapies to treat these conditions.
- Experience with cell and molecular biology techniques such as FACS, RNA-seq, ChIP-Seq, ATAC-Seq, relevant immunohistochemistry methodologies, and animal models of vascular and metabolic disease.
- Experience with submission of grant applications for extramural support from NIH, American Heart Association, or other sponsors.
