The laboratory of Dr. Mingshan Xue (https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) in the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) is seeking applicants for a staff scientist position. The NRI is dedicated to research aimed at understanding normal brain function and the pathogeneses of neurological disorders. Located in the Texas Medical Center, the NRI provides a vibrant environment to facilitate collaborations between labs and promote dynamic interactions between basic researchers and clinicians.

Job Duties
  • Design and conduct research studies to investigate the synaptic mechanisms of cortical circuits in mice, including dysfunctions of cortical circuits in novel mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Independently plan, design and perform research experiments to investigate synaptic mechanisms that govern cortical circuit function in mice using two-photon imaging electrophysiology, optogenetics, molecular genetics, and animal behaviors experiments.
  • Develop and characterize novel mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders and evaluate dysfunctions of cortical circuits.
  • Analyze, interpret, and document data using appropriate methods. Maintains detailed laboratory notebooks and experimental records.
  • Work collaboratively with other lab members to experimentally support projects and ensure that projects move forward.
  • Assist PI in overseeing logistics of projects in the lab.
  • Responsible for management of transgenic mouse colony and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements for animal research.
  • Conduct literature searches to identify optimal scientific protocols to address experimental questions.
  • Develop research techniques when necessary for specific research projects.
  • Coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff.
  • Train new lab members in laboratory processes and specific research techniques.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Three years of post doctoral research experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred applicants should have a strong research record in one or more of the following areas: in vivo two-photon imaging, in vivo electrophysiology, and animal behavior.
  • While previous experience in neuroscience is desired, we are also interested in individuals with a broad range of expertise. Applicants with a background in math, physics, or computer science are encouraged to apply.
