Job Summary

The Academia and Health Services Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Texas Southern University offers a two-year fellowship to postdoctoral research scientists in natural, public health, or behavioral science. The fellowship provides foundational scientific and career development training necessary for a successful career in academia and health services research. The fellow receives research training and individualized one‑on‑one mentoring from a multidisciplinary team of investigators with social, behavioral, public health, and clinical expertise in minority health and health disparities research.

Opportunities include conducting basic, clinical, social, and/or behavioral research, particularly on maternal‑child health disparities and the multiple factors (individual, social, environmental) that contribute to these disparities. The ideal candidate will have completed a doctoral degree and possess the skills to conduct social, behavioral, or environmental studies, with a desire to pursue an academic career such as an Assistant Professor.

The Postdoctoral Fellow is a highly collaborative, self‑motivated, creative individual who is adaptable to new processes, capable of functioning independently, and interested in maternal health and health disparities topics.

• Participate in a formalized research training curriculum and seminars
• Complete the university’s teaching certificate program
• Complete research tasks assigned by mentors
• Conduct literature searches and review research topics
• Participate in and present at multidisciplinary journal club meetings
• Prepare and present research findings at local and national conferences
• Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication
• Prepare funding applications, as appropriate to the fellow’s research interests and goals
• Establish a research lab for environmental toxicology analysis (for basic scientists)

• Support teaching and learning in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences through lectures, interactive lessons, and assessments in maternal health‑related topics

Ph.D. in Public Health, Environmental Toxicology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

• Demonstrated skills in computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Office 365)

• Additional training or certification in public health, social determinants of health, or related fields
