The primary purpose of the Supervisor, Public Safety position is to plan and supervise the daily activities of UTPD Public Safety Officers and Senior Public Safety Officers, to be the main contact and resolution point for building occupants in order to resolve security and safety issues, and to maintain and implement policies, procedures, and operational plans for ensuring safety and security.

Coordinate with Police personnel as necessary to maintain standards, effective communication, and continuous improvement processes for the delivery of security services in their assigned area. Develop, train, and evaluate personnel to meet professional standards and customer expectations. Through observation and patrol, safeguard institutional property, identify security issues, and enforce institutional rules and regulations. In emergencies, observe, report, and facilitate the orderly response to and, if necessary, evacuation of buildings and structures.

An ideal candidate is a proactive and experienced leader who effectively supervises and develops public safety teams, resolves complex security issues, collaborates with law enforcement, and ensures a safe, compliant environment through strong communication, operational oversight, and continuous improvement.

Key Functions
  • Provides leadership, supervision, training, and professional development of public safety officers and senior public safety officers.
  • Conducts annual and periodic performance reviews for assigned personnel and provides compliance and performance reports to management.
  • Plans, schedules, coordinates, and assigns work, establishing goals and priorities for subordinate employees.
  • Serves as a front‑line contact with clients and acts as the customer’s advocate to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of security services.
  • Provides technical expertise to resolve safety and security issues involving personnel and other institutional staff.
  • Responds to calls for service and provides requested services in a timely manner and in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Reviews processes and procedures for effectiveness and efficiency and makes recommendations on process improvements.
  • Meets and confers with law enforcement personnel and directly supports police initiatives in university buildings and on property, through intelligence, surveillance, or patrol activity to prevent crime, identify wanted persons, or anticipate the opportunity for crime, disorder, or fires.
  • Meets and confers with security and access control systems management to ensure the staff has a clear and thorough working knowledge of security devices and protocols; ensures devices operate reliably and reports failures immediately.

Education

Required:

High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, or related field.

Experience

Required:

Five years experience in security or related field to include two years in a supervisory or team‑lead capacity. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Licenses/Certifications

Required:

Texas Drivers License, Valid Texas Class A, B, or C driver’s license.

Preferred: IAHSS Certification as a Security Officer Physical Security Professional Certification and/or one or more levels of certification (Certified Healthcare Security Officer, Certified Advanced Healthcare Security Officer, or Certified Healthcare Security Supervisor) from the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety.

Other

Must pass pre‑employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
