Job SummaryThe Houston ISD Police P.A.W.S K‑9 program’s mission is to enhance and assist in responding to and treating trauma and mental health by providing well‑trained dogs as a medium in those efforts. The program encourages positive relationships with students, staff, and the community through school programs and community events. It also serves as a tool within the police department to provide comfort during emergencies.
MajorDuties & Responsibilities
staff wellness, partnership with government and non‑profit organizations addressing trauma, mental health, and crime, and any other use deemed appropriate by the Chief of Police or his designee.
- High School diploma or GED required; 48 college hours preferred.
- Three years law enforcement experience.
- Work history demonstrating excellent decision‑making skills and sound judgment.
- Basic TCOLE Peace Officer Certification.
- Proficiency in Texas Penal Code, Education Code, juvenile laws, and use‑of‑force requirements.
- Good general knowledge of dogs and training methods using positive reinforcement.
- Mental Health Officer Certification or successful completion of the required course before becoming a P.A.W.S handler.
- Must pass all certifications with a P.A.W.S during phases 1, 2, and 3.
- Must be able to house the P.A.W.S in the candidate’s residence or obtain written permission from the property owner; must have adequate space for a kennel.
- Must keep the P.A.W.S during weather and other emergencies when boarding is not possible.
- On‑call twenty‑four hours; ability to work within a team environment.
- Must meet dress and grooming regulations of the Houston ISD Police Department.
- Must have satisfactory supervisory evaluations and commit to remain in the unit for a minimum of three years unless transferred by necessity or failure to meet expectations.
- Comfortable with working dogs and maintaining a compatible home life.
- Candidate will appear before a Canine Handler Selection Board; the Canine Supervisor will conduct a home inspection.
- No supervisory or direct people‑management responsibilities; may provide occasional guidance and training.
- Decisions generally have minor impact; ability to exercise independent judgment.
- Communicates with customers, senior staff, and managers; handles escalated issues.
- Physical:
Ability to carry or lift 45 pounds or more; exposed to hazardous substances, dangerous situations, and adverse weather conditions.
