Work Schedule:
PRN (as needed) – open to any day and shift.
At Houston Methodist, the Security Officer position is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors by patrolling and monitoring hospital premises and personnel. This position provides assistance with personal protection, traffic control and emergency response services and may employ Houston Methodist‑approved defensive tactics to ensure safety.

Qualifications- High School diploma or equivalent (GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, or partial/final post‑secondary education).
- Preferred experience in criminal justice, security or related fields.
- Required licenses:
Security Officer state license (Non‑Commissioned, or Commissioned Level 3, or Personal Protection Officer Level 4) submitted within 14 days of hire and obtained within one year;
Texas Driver License within 90 days; IAHSS Certified Security Officer (Basic/Advanced/Supervisor) within 90 days;
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) within 60 days. - Preferred:
Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
- Demonstrates skills necessary to safely perform the job through ongoing assessments.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English.
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers, using positive language.
- Ability to multitask and remain calm under stress.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Webmail.
- Knowledge of Public Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality.
- Demonstrates emergency preparedness knowledge.
- Maintain high customer satisfaction while ensuring safety for patients, visitors, staff, and assets.
- Use professional telephone etiquette in communications with management and coworkers.
- Respond to requests for personal security coverage and assistance with directions or guidance.
- Promote a positive work environment and contribute to team‑focused results and employee engagement.
- Secure premises and personnel by patrolling facilities, monitoring surveillance cameras, and permitting entry as needed.
- Respond to radio dispatches, answer calls and complaints, and assess emergencies promptly, provide assistance, and make recommendations.
- Accurately record occurrences, observations, and conduct witness interviews.
- Respond immediately to emergency codes and take appropriate action.
- Maintain a safe environment by following all safety, hazardous material, emergency preparedness, and HIPAA policies.
- Prevent loss and damage by reporting irregularities and informing violators of policy and procedures.
- Utilize and maintain HM and department equipment per manufacturer specifications.
- Use resources cost‑effectively and prioritize daily tasks independently.
- Implement actions that promote workplace safety culture and proactively prevent workplace violence.
- Support hospital and department goals and contribute innovative solutions through participation in projects.
- Engage in self‑growth by attending in‑services and continuing education; update My Development Plan regularly.
- Work Attire:
Uniform required. Scrubs, business professional, or other department‑approved attire not required. - On‑call:
Employees may be required to be on‑call during emergencies (disaster, severe weather events) regardless of selection. - Travel:
May require travel within the Houston metropolitan area; outside Houston area not required.
