DescriptionServes as a commissioned law enforcement officer responsible for protecting persons and property for the University of Houston. Endeavors to detect and prevent crime in order to maintain peace, order and security. Pursuant to the State of Texas Executive Order No. GA‑48, this position researches, works on, or has access to critical infrastructure and requires the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the University infrastructure.
This position requires personnel be routinely reviewed to determine whether or not criminal history or continuous connections for the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the employee from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure.
- Enforces all laws, including but not limited to penal and traffic laws.
- Patrols assigned area on foot or in a police vehicle.
- Responds to all calls for assistance, service, and hazardous situations.
- Conducts preliminary investigations of reported incidents, completes required reports.
- Conducts crime prevention program presentations.
- Attends required annual training seminars.
- Utilizes police equipment such as firearm, baton, handcuffs, mobile and handheld radios, camera and other equipment.
- Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have a clear Texas driver’s license.
- The applicant must be TCOLE (formerly TCLEOSE) certified.
- Must pass a Criminal History and valid Texas Driver’s License check prior to an interview.
- Must pass a Background Investigation prior to employment.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug screening.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, and overtime assignments.
- Must submit the following information:
Date of Birth, Driver’s license, and last four digits of SSN. - Must successfully complete a TCOLE basic licensing course and pass the TCOLE licensing examination, or be within 45 days of completion of a TCOLE‑recognized basic peace officer licensing course.
- Must be able to obtain a Texas driver’s license at the time of a bona fide job offer.
- Must pass multiple phases of review, including oral and written tests and a background check clearance.
The physical demands described represent those required to perform the essential responsibilities of the job. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, work shifts including days, evenings, nights, and weekends, and may be required to remain at their post for an additional shift. All staff are essential personnel and are required to report to work during inclement weather.
