Public Safety Security Shift Coordinator

At Houston Methodist, the Public Safety/Security Shift Coordinator position is responsible for assigned activities of the Public Safety/Security department. In addition to performing the duties and functions of Security Officer, this position provides assignments, leads investigations and reviews reports for accuracy and thoroughness, staff protection, traffic control assignments, and emergency response services. This position provides Public Safety/Security to patients, visitors, physicians, and employees.

This position exercises sound judgment and is self-motivated to work with limited supervision. The Public Safety/Security Shift Coordinator position must be flexible to work shift assignments, which includes all shifts and weekends. This position utilizes camera and card access systems.

Non-exempt

• High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
• Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred

• Two years security or related field experience
• Healthcare experience preferred

• Must have one of the following: SECUR-N - Security Officer Non-Commissioned
  - State Licensure Submission of application within 14 days of hire date, and obtained within one year of employment
• SECUR-C
  - Security Officer Commissioned
  - State Licensure Level 3 or Personal Protection Officer Level 4 licensure
  and
• IAHSS
  - Certified Security Officer-Basic/Advanced/Supervisor (IAHSS) - International Association for Healthcare Security &  within 90 days and
• DL
  - Driver License
  - State Licensure
  - Texas Department of Licensing and  must obtain in Texas within 90 days and
• NVCRISIS
  - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) - Crisis Prevention Institute within 60 days

• BLS
  - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

• Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
• Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
• Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
• Must have the ability to multi task and function calmly in stressful situations
• Must possess strong customer service skills
• Proficient computer skills including, but not limited to, knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Webmail
• Knowledgeable of all Public Safety Policies and Procedures
• Understand HIPAA and Patient confidentiality compliance
• Demonstrates emergency preparedness knowledge

• Utilizes clear communication using professional telephone etiquette. Communicates effectively with management and coworkers on tasks, processes and procedures. • Coordinates training, offers direction and develops skills of team members and continually assists with improving skills, performance and outcomes, orientation of department personnel. Monitors competency completion for onboarding hires, as appropriate.
• Serves as the primary resource for staff in all areas of service that the department performs. Interfacing with department staff to provide feedback to management on team member’s performance and conduct. Collaborates/supports management for improvement of employee satisfaction, implementation of protocols and objectives with team members to result in optimization of staff performance, teamwork, patient safety, and customer service.

• Secures premises and individuals by patrolling facilities; monitoring surveillance cameras and access points to permit authorized entry, ensuring all Security Officers do the same, as needed.
• Responds to all radio dispatches as necessary, answers calls and complaints and assesses and makes recommendations as needed for all emergent situations. Leads and maintains high customer satisfaction while providing the highest level of safety and security to patients, visitors, staff and assets.
