Position Overview

The Carpenter performs skilled carpentry and structural work under general supervision. Responsibilities include designing, building, retrofitting, maintaining and inspecting structures and facilities to meet project plans, specifications and building codes.

Responsibilities
  • Complete skilled carpentry/structural work according to project specifications and plans.
  • Act as lead worker to other classified staff and helpers/laborers in the area.
  • Maintain, calibrate and service small tools and equipment.
  • Monitor work performed by outside contractors for adherence to contract requirements and report findings to the supervisor.
  • Assist in inspections, testing and review of specifications for general carpentry project requirements.
  • Maintain a neat workspace and organize tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Comply with all safety requirements and participate in safety meetings.
  • Review daily task assignments, clarify material needs with the supervisor, and work in a constant state of alertness.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of civil underground, structural bridge elements, pile driving operations, concrete formwork systems, and structural steel erection.
  • Comprehensive understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction.
  • Proficiency in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools.
  • Experience reading plans and understanding tasks.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex issues, both logical and interpersonal.
  • Professional verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Team problem‑solving abilities and the capacity to take direction from supervisors.
  • Strong attention to detail, adherence to work rules and project schedule.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure and maintain accuracy.
  • Strong self‑motivation and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to correct conditions that affect employee safety.
  • Operating a motor vehicle safely and efficiently.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional weekends and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Four (4) years of master‑level experience as a carpenter in heavy highway or structural operations, commercial, industrial, or military construction settings.
  • Ability to pass drug and background screening.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid state driver’s license and qualification to operate a vehicle under the company’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to provide own basic carpentry/structural hand tools.
  • Experience in federal government projects.
