Work Schedule

Day Shift: Monday-Friday - 6:00am to 3:00pm

Job Summary

This position is primarily responsible for assisting carpenters in the construction, repair, and maintenance of vessels, barges, and shipyard structures. The Carpenter Helper supports daily operations by preparing materials, maintaining tools, and ensuring work areas are organized and safe. This role requires the ability to work in a physically demanding, safety‑sensitive environment while following direction from skilled carpenters and supervisors.

Responsibilities
  • Assist carpenters with measuring, cutting, and assembling wood and other materials used in marine construction and repair.
  • Prepare and transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper storage of tools and materials.
  • Support installation and removal of structures such as scaffolding, form work, decking, and bulkheads.
  • Operate basic hand tools and power tools under supervision.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and adherence to shipyard safety standards.
  • Assist with layout work and basic carpentry tasks as directed.
  • Perform general labor duties, including lifting, carrying, and site cleanup.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Participate in safety meetings and comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in construction, carpentry, or shipyard environment preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work in various environments, including outdoors, confined spaces, and at heights.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and willingness to learn carpentry skills.
  • Ability to read a tape measure and follow instructions accurately.
  • Must have good communication skills and follow directions.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to take direction.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Must meet company requirements for background, drug screening, and safety training.
Physical / Mental Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel‑toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFDs), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, employees in this position must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back in performance of work.
  • Climbing stairs, and/or vertical ladders of varying heights.
