Position Overview
The Houston Public Works Department seeks candidates for the Houston Drinking Water Operations/Systems Maintenance Service Line. The position is located at various sites in Houston and involves maintenance and operational support of the water distribution system. The role is open to all persons interested.
Reporting LocationVarious Locations throughout Houston.
Workdays & HoursMonday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (rotating schedules).
- Subject to change.
- Utilize troubleshooting skills to address water utility operations and maintenance.
- Perform maintenance tasks related to the operation of the water distribution system.
- Isolate water lines by operating valves and reviewing GEOLINKS to determine valve locations.
- Operate valves and flush hydrants to address water quality issues.
- Renew utility services to designated areas. Communicate and coordinate work with other technicians and support personnel by telephone, text, or email.
- May operate general equipment or perform tasks that do not require specialized licenses such as repairing and maintaining valves, hydrants, and maintenance of facilities.
- Inspect work sites and use trucks and equipment to transport equipment, tools, and materials to work locations.
- Prepare and maintain reports, forms, and records for operational assignments.
- Use a data tracking system to assist with service calls and water maintenance repairs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Routine lifting of up to 40 pounds, prolonged walking on rough surfaces, exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture, and unpleasant air conditions. The role is a Department of Public Works and Engineering Emergency Management Position at Tier I Level.
Minimum Requirements Educational RequirementsHigh school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions. Supplemented by specialized courses or training in equipment operation.
Experience RequirementsSix (6) months of general maintenance/work experience.
License RequirementsValid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy.
Preferences- Preference given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications necessary for the duties of the position.
Yes. Position subject to random drug testing. If a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
Salary InformationFactors used in determining salary include qualifications and pay rates of employees in this classification.
Pay Grade 13.
