Job Description

The Telecommunications Specialist is responsible for providing day-to-day support and maintenance for the school district’s voice and communication systems. This includes managing Moves, Adds, Changes, and Deletes (MACD) for desk phones and voicemail accounts, configuring and maintaining call routing, and ensuring reliable operation of fax services and essential emergency communication lines such as fire alarm, elevator, pool, and dedicated backup emergency phones.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required. Degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology, Telecommunications, or related field is preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in telecommunications, VoIP systems preferably with Cisco Systems, or related IT support role (school district experience is a plus).
Technical Skills
  • Experience in installing, troubleshooting, and supporting VoIP phones, voicemails, call routing adjustments, and emergency communication lines, including POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and/or cellular services.
  • Basic understanding of networking fundamentals, including LAN/WAN environments, routing and switching, and network cabling.
  • Familiarity with K–12 telecommunication laws and regulations, ensuring compliance with 911 requirements and applicable federal and state communication standards.
  • Ability to use ticketing systems for reporting and tracking telecommunication issues to vendors and service providers.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Handle daily telecommunications service tickets, ensuring timely resolution and accurate documentation.
  • Perform Moves, Adds, Changes, and Deletes (MACD) for district phone and voicemail system.
  • Manage and maintain call routing configurations, auto-attendants, and call hunt groups.
  • Support and troubleshoot Fax services and ensure proper functionality across district sites.
  • Ensure emergency phone lines (including elevator phones, fire panel lines, and E911 services) are operational and compliant with safety standards.
  • Coordinate with telecommunications vendors and service providers to procure, install, support, troubleshoot, and modify telecommunications services and equipment.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify issues affecting voice and communications services.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of phone system configurations, extensions, and service changes.
  • Perform site surveys, review work pertaining to telecommunications systems at new and renovation sites.
  • Coordinate and assist with telecom-related projects such as system upgrades.
  • Ensure adherence to district policies, security standards, and communication protocols.
  • Provide end-user support and training as needed for telecommunication related services.
  • Provide after-hours support as scheduled and on a rotational On-Call basis.

Working Conditions

Frequent district-wide travel and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.

Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.

Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).

Frequent district wide travel.

Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
