Position: Senior Journeyman Electrician (Commercial)

Baylor College of Medicine Facilities Services has an opening for a State of Texas Journeyman Electrician with knowledge in renovations of office space and labs, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of motor controllers, data logging and metering of electrical system. Knowledge of the NEC and NFPA 70E is required.

This position supports critical research, clinical, and campus facilities through electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, renovations, lighting upgrades, and electrical system improvements across Baylor College of Medicine facilities.

Job Duties

Remodel administrative, clinical and research office space, clinical and basic science research labs and vivarium areas at main campus and satellite facilities.

  • Read, understand and comply with local and state building code regulations (NFPA 70E and NEC).
  • Read and understand blueprints for remodeling of office spaces, labs and vivarium facilities.
  • Generate an electrical materials list and order materials.
  • Run conduit from sizes ½” to 4” EMT and rigid. Make proper conduit bends that comply with the NEC. Install various types of receptacles, light switches, and wire mold in offices spaces and labs.
  • Install new (low voltage through 480V) transformers and panels to upgrade existing electrical system ensuring adequate space and the equipment is up to the NEC.
  • Follow safety procedures by the NFPA and OSHA.
  • Pull wire sizes in the appropriate conduit size in accordance with the NEC. Ensure appropriate number of wires / sizes are pulled in the correct sized conduit to meet the NEC and allow additional circuits to be added if required.
  • Install and terminate wire circuits in transformers, panels and motor starters. Work with Energy Management department to set up equipment controls to operate off the building energy management system.
  • Install receptacles, light switches, and wire mold in offices spaces and labs. Coordinate with clinical and research personnel to make sure the correct equipment plug receptacle is installed accessible to the equipment served.

Preventative maintenance, testing, recording of all electrical systems at main campus and satellite facilities.

  • Read and use electrical specifications to ensure the proper electrical system is installed for equipment.
  • Schedule work accordingly with office or lab personnel and other trades.
  • Use knowledge in the connection and use of electrical system recording equipment including the Fluke 1785 which we use for recording all forms of electrical anomalies and read and write a report of issues found.
  • Perform electrical preventative maintenance on motor starters (120V to 480V) and repair or replace any defective part.
  • Perform infrared thermography on all electrical panels, transformers and motor starters to ensure proper operation and that there are no hot spots on the system. Operate various infrared cameras, understand readings, and download data collected.

Upgrade lighting systems for main campus, satellite facilities and vivarium facilities.

  • Install Lutron and Leviton light sensors and relays to existing or new lights, and program sensors and relays ensuring compliance with the current City of Houston building codes.
  • Calculate square footage and ceiling height to know what foot-candle the lights need to be when replacing fluorescent light fixtures with the new LED light fixtures in accordance with the Department of Energy guidelines.
  • Upgrade existing exterior lights with new LED lights for efficiency and with more light (lumens) for a more secure area.
