Substation Relay Technician

We are seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Substation Relay Technician to support the safe and reliable operation of substations and distribution equipment. This technician installs, maintains, calibrates, modifies, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems within a substation environment. The role also includes support for project management functions such as vendor and contractor coordination, scheduling, inspection, testing, and commissioning.
What you'll do:
- Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relaying equipment in substations.
- Perform functional testing on control circuits for relay panels, transformers, and circuit breakers.
- Develop and execute relay macros and testing routines to verify protection scheme integrity.
- Conduct end-to-end relay testing using relay test software; analyze performance based on fault types.
- Develop written standard commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures.
- Review relay settings and logic equations to ensure alignment with system protection designs.
- Create, review, and execute substation equipment isolation and restoration switching procedures.
- Lead safety briefings and maintain a strong safety culture on job sites.
- Investigate electrical issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Interpret protection and control schematic and wiring diagrams to identify errors or inconsistencies.
- Use manufacturer documentation to support relay testing and maintenance tasks.
- Assist with other duties as assigned, including electric system construction and maintenance.
What you'll bring:
- Associate degree in Electrical or Electronic Sciences preferred; equivalent combination of college, vocational, or industry training accepted.
- Completion of a Substation or Relay Testing Apprentice Program with certification preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year working in a substation environment, including project management, construction, testing, and operations involving protective relaying and SCADA; 3+ years preferred.
- Hands-on experience with protective relays in systems ranging from 480V up to 345kV, including familiarity with major brands (SEL, GE Multilin, Siemens, etc.).
- Proficiency in relay test software such as AcSELerator and other diagnostic tools.
- Skilled in troubleshooting distribution control circuits and SCADA communication systems.
- Working knowledge of programmable control systems and monitoring systems.
- Proficiency with computer systems and IED (Intelligent Electronic Device) interface software.
- Strong understanding of electrical theory, circuits, and trigonometry.
- Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot from electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards: NEC, NESC, OSHA, NFPA, and NERC testing requirements.
- Experience with transformer monitoring systems is a strong plus.
- Completion of a Substation or Relay Testing Apprentice Program with certification preferred; NETA Level 3 or Level 4 certification preferred.
- Valid Driver's License required; CDL-A preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong project management and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to respond to emergency call-backs.
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces and extreme weather conditions.
- Committed to practicing safe electrical work procedures.
Physical requirements and work environment:
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move equipment that's up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work onsite in a mining or data center environment (heat, noise, etc.).
- Exposure to high noise levels and varying temperatures.
