Position Information

TxDOT is seeking a motivated Traffic Systems Technician I or II to join our Traffic Systems Maintenance Office located at 6810 Old Katy Road in Houston, Texas. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start and build a long‑term career in traffic operations while serving the traveling public.

In this role, you will work as part of a hands‑on team responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting traffic signals, roadway illumination, and related traffic systems throughout the Houston District. These systems play a critical role in keeping roadways safe and operating efficiently for the millions of people who travel them every day.

This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, solving problems, and learning technical skills. No prior experience is required for entry‑level candidates. TxDOT will provide training on equipment, systems, procedures, and safety practices, giving you the tools and knowledge needed to succeed and grow within the organization.

We are looking for someone who is dependable, eager to learn, works well with others, and takes pride in quality work. A positive attitude and willingness to develop new skills are just as important as experience.

Performs entry‑level work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of traffic systems, communication, illumination and data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with government and private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

Performs routine work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance and programming of traffic systems, communication, illumination and data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with government and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and assists in developing recommendations for long‑term solutions.

Assists in working with other government and private entities concerning utilities and rights‑of‑way.

Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
