Water Utility Equipment Operator
The Water Utility Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution system. This includes excavation for water main repairs, valve replacements, hydrant installations, and related tasks. The position also assists crews with manual labor and site preparation, ensuring safe and efficient job site operation.
Examples Of DutiesEquipment Operation
- Operate backhoes, excavators, skid steers, dump trucks, and other equipment for water utility construction and repair.
- Safely dig around underground utilities and support crews during water main, valve, and service line repairs.
- Load and unload materials and equipment at job sites.
- Perform daily inspections of equipment and report maintenance needs.
Utility Support Duties
- Assist field crews with installation, replacement, and repair of water lines, valves, meters, and hydrants.
- Set up job sites, including traffic control and excavation safety measures.
- Backfill, compact, and restore surfaces following repairs.
Maintenance & Recordkeeping
- Complete equipment checklists and report usage, fuel, and issues.
- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of assigned vehicles and machinery.
- Ensure proper storage and securing of tools and materials.
Emergency Response
- Respond to after-hours call-outs for water main breaks or other emergency utility repairs.
- Support storm recovery and debris clearing operations related to water system functions.
Other Duties
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills & Competencies
- Skilled in the safe operation of heavy equipment and hand tools.
- Knowledge of excavation safety, utility construction practices, and traffic control procedures.
- Ability to perform physical labor and work in outdoor environments under various conditions.
- Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions and safety guidelines.
- Experience reading utility maps and job site layouts is a plus.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in equipment operation, utility construction, or related field.
- CDL Class A or B preferred.
