Position Summary

The Supported Employment Specialist provides employment support services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to assist them in obtaining and maintaining competitive employment in the community. This position works directly with clients and community employers to support job placement, job coaching, and ongoing employment stability.

Services are primarily delivered in community employment settings and at employer job sites. Support services must be provided during the hours clients are working. As a result, the position requires flexibility in scheduling to meet client employment needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide job coaching and employment support to individuals with IDD in community-based employment settings.
  • Assist clients in learning job duties, workplace expectations, and appropriate workplace behavior.
  • Support clients in developing job skills, independence, and workplace confidence.
  • Monitor client performance and provide feedback, guidance, and encouragement to support job retention.
  • Assist clients with workplace problem-solving and communication when needed.
  • Assist in identifying potential employment opportunities for clients in the community.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with community employers and workplace supervisors.
  • Represent the agency professionally while supporting employer expectations and workplace productivity standards.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided in accordance with agency policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Complete service notes, reports, and other required documentation to ensure program accountability and funding compliance.
  • Participate in program meetings, staff training, and case reviews as required.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisors, case managers, families, and team members regarding client progress and service needs.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary planning and coordination of services.
  • Follow all agency policies, procedures, safety standards, and communication protocols.

Work Environment and Schedule Expectations

Normal operating hours for this position are generally Monday through Friday during daytime business hours. However, Supported Employment Specialists must provide services during the hours clients are working.

Work is performed primarily in community employment settings such as local businesses and job sites.

Employees may be required to work occasional evenings or weekends to provide necessary coaching and employment support. Schedules are assigned based on client service needs and program requirements. Duties may require travel within the service area to client job locations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, psychology, education, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities, workforce development, or employment support services preferred.
  • Ability to work independently in community settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to travel between job sites.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout workplace environments.
  • Ability to assist clients with workplace tasks when necessary.
