Career Overview

We are looking for a mission‑motivated individual who enjoys helping others. Join the Office of the Attorney General’s Child Support Division (CSD) to encourage responsible parenting, promote parental involvement, and ensure children in Texas receive the support they need.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed investigations to locate absent parents, verify employment, and determine assets.
  • Assist in establishing paternity and obtaining court orders for financial support and health care coverage.
  • Prepare documents for legal and administrative actions to establish or enforce child support orders.
  • Negotiate lump‑sum payments from non‑custodial parents who owe past‑due child/medical support.
  • Negotiate out‑of‑court settlements and agreements with parties.
  • Monitor child support cases and refer delinquent cases for enforcement actions.
  • Document all case actions using agency tools such as the Children Are My Priority (ChAMP) system.
  • Maintain virtual files for accuracy in the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) repository.
  • Review cases to determine eligibility for closure.
  • Attend court hearings to assist legal staff as needed.
  • Research case information on the computer, including the ChAMP system.
  • Stay current with child support policies, Texas Family Law, federal regulations, and other states’ IV‑D regulations.
  • Assess child support cases to determine appropriate case action.
  • Explain Child Support Program policies, procedures, and regulations to customers.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and complaints, assessing their validity with impartiality.
  • Serve as Notary Public and perform related work as assigned.
  • Maintain and update knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions.
  • Attend work regularly and maintain a reliable schedule.
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including ethics and integrity.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; experience in child support programs, credit collections, investigations, legal assistance, customer service, or related fields may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Skills:

    Interviewing and negotiating; word‑processing and data entry/retrieval with a personal computer; basic mathematical computations; multi‑tasking and prioritization; effective oral and written communication; sound judgment and decision‑making.
  • Abilities:
    Receive and respond positively to constructive feedback; work cooperatively within a professional office; provide excellent customer service; perform in‑person work at the OAG location; arrange personal transportation; work more than 40 hours when needed; lift and relocate up to 30 lbs; travel up to 15% of the time including overnight; type 35 words per minute.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Four‑year college degree; investigative practices and techniques; proficiency in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking).
