Principal Engineer - Cloud Efficiency & Optimization

Our Principal Engineer is a lead member of the engineering staff working across all GEICO Tech to ensure that we provide a fiction-less experience to our customers, maintain the highest standards of protection and availability. The ideal candidate has the broad and deep technical knowledge, typically ranging from front-end UIs through back-end systems and all points in between.

Position Responsibilities:

As a Principal Engineer, you will:

• Drive efficiency and improve governance across GEICO Tech.
• Focus on a few key areas and provide leadership to the engineering teams.
• Influence and build vision to solve complex problems for building enterprise-class business applications.
• Accountable for the quality, usability & performance of the solutions.
• Lead in design sessions and code reviews to elevate the quality of engineering across the organization.
• Utilize programming languages like Go, .NET, Python, SQL, and No
  
  SQL databases, Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes, and a variety of Azure tools and services.
• Mentor more junior team members professionally to help them realize their full potential.
• Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams.

Qualifications:

• Fluency and Specialization with at least two modern languages such as Go, Java, C++, Python or C# including object-oriented design.
• Experience in building products micro-services-oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs.
• Experience building the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and current systems.
• Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code.
• Fluency in Dev Ops Concepts, GEICO's Cloud Architecture, and Azure Dev Ops Operational Framework
• Experience in Data Center Structure, Capabilities & Offerings, including the Azure platform, and its native services.
• Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication).
• 5+ years of experience in data software development, using data technologies such as Relational & No
  
  SQL databases, open data formats, and programming languages such as Python, Scala, and/or other frameworks, building data pipelines (ETL and ELT) with batch or streaming ingestion, loading and transforming data, and developing with big data technologies such as Spark, Hadoop, and Map Reduce
• Experience in designing Kubernetes topologies that include networking, ingress controllers, networking, pod scaling, taints and tole rations, orchestration, and namespace management for RBAC.
• Standardize and enforce CI/CD best practices for AKS pipelines, build/release retention policies, audit trails, logging, metrics, and traceability to establish and implement KPI release gates.
• Good understanding of the public cloud services AKS and cloud native management services and tools for Azure. Hands on experience with different automation tools, source control and pipelines Identify opportunities to integrate continual security and compliance testing into the delivery lifecycle.
• Experience in application monitoring tools and profiling tools (e.g. CPU, Memory profiling tools)

Experience:

• 6+ years of professional software development experience
• 3+ years of experience with architecture and design
• 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
• 3+ years of experience with Kubernetes
• 4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
• 2+ years of experience in open-source frameworks – capacity modeling/benchmarking, application performance benchmarking, auto-recovery/auto-remediation tools

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
