Senior Software Engineer - FlightAware Backend; Onsite

About the Role

Flight Aware is looking for a backend software engineer to build state‑of‑the‑art systems that power the Flight Aware website and mobile apps used by millions of people. The role is based in Houston, TX and is onsite.

• Contribute to building new features from scratch and delivering them to production.
• Build and scale Flight Aware’s backend infrastructure, including streaming data feeds, databases, queueing systems, compute infrastructure, and analysis engines.
• Ensure customers have a seamless self‑service account management experience and secure access to services according to their purchased products.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver cloud‑native microservices that power the website, mobile apps, and data reporting.
• Write high‑quality, well‑tested code for some of the largest airlines and airports in the world.

• Work with cutting‑edge technologies such as Go, Rust, Python, Kubernetes, AWS, and more.
• Apply cloud‑native approaches to software development and delivery.
• Mentor junior engineers and become a go‑to person in an area of expertise.
• Expand application of best practices, provide feedback, and continuously improve processes.
• Participate in a diverse team and work on a variety of projects exposing you to new technologies.

• Typically requires a STEM degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree plus at least 3 years of experience.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
• Experience as a software engineer using languages and technologies such as Go, Rust, C++, Postgre
  
  SQL, MySQL, or similar.
• Understanding of API contract importance in software engineering.
• Experience with cloud technologies, especially AWS and Kubernetes.
• Experience supporting microservice architectures, service meshes, message/event queues, asynchronous workflows, and Graph
  
  QL interfaces.
• Experience with large‑scale SaaS systems, including Postgre
  
  SQL, PostGIS, Timescale
  
  DB, Redis, and similar storage and caching technologies.
• Knowledge of security best practices and secure software design.
• Proactive learning, problem‑solving, and openness to new approaches.
• Interest or experience in aviation, e.g., being a private pilot.
