Overview

Research Software Engineer – HPC focus at Johnson Space Center (JSC) on the Flight Sciences Laboratory (FSL). This position supports the Amentum JETSII contract and involves developing, deploying, and optimizing software for use in the FSL and other NASA HPC resources.

FSL is a primary NASA HPC lab supporting programs including ISS, Orion, SLS, Commercial Crew, Moon initiatives, and more. The system includes hundreds of nodes, tens of thousands of cores, and substantial storage serving a large user base.

Major Duties / Responsibilities
  • Partner with FSL users to evaluate and optimize software development practices and ensure project success.
  • Participate in planning and major development efforts on software engineering projects for flight software, Guidance and Navigation, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with partners and external contractors to meet software requirements and address bugs.
  • Mentor and promote good software development practices in HPC environments.
Requisition Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 5–10 years of related experience. Licenses/certifications may be required.
  • A minimum of a BS degree in computer science or engineering with 4+ years of software engineering experience beyond the degree.
  • Experience programming in multiple languages (compiled and interpreted) and build systems (e.g., GNU Make).
  • Demonstrated experience with version control (Git), containers, and CI/CD.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment.
  • Experience helping other users in HPC services.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills; demonstrated task planning ability.
  • Experience daily use of Linux OS and command line interface (CLI).
Requisition Preferences
  • 6+ years of experience beyond the degree.
  • Experience developing software for HPC environments.
  • Experience with Monte Carlo workflows and optimizing them for HPC.
  • Experience with Trick-based simulation workflows and related toolsets.
  • Familiarity with modern software practices (test-driven development, Agile, AI coding assistants) and solid knowledge of software lifecycle.
  • Experience integrating C++, Fortran, Python, and shell workflows in HPC or simulation environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with MPI-based workflows.
  • Activity within the broader open-source software community.
  • Experience with Podman in HPC environments and with Git Lab and Jenkins tools.

Essential Functions & Work Environment

Generally, an office environment but work may involve inside or outside tasks depending on the assignment.

Physical Requirements: Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (approximately 90% of time) and lifting up to 25 lbs (about 5% of time).

Equipment & Machines: Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance: Regular attendance is required; ability to work outside normal schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
