Job Title
Bus Driver
Reports ToDirector of Transportation
Primary PurposeEnsure safe, efficient, and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and authorized personnel to and from schools.
Qualifications- Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class
B) with endorsement and all required licenses, permits, and certificates. - High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Acceptable driving record as determined by Texas Department of Public Safety and district.
- Completion of Texas School Bus Driver’s Course, allied courses, and examinations.
- Certification of good health required by State of Texas, signed by licensed physician.
- Ability to pass physical dexterity test.
- Interest in education and welfare of children.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Pass alcohol and drug tests.
- Complete required bus driver safety training.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Read, write, and perform basic math skills including interpreting routes and maps.
- Effective communication.
- Knowledge of student discipline procedure and ability to manage behavior.
- Operate bus and evacuate safely, including climbing in and out of emergency door.
- Follow assigned route and adhere to schedule.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify Fleet Manager of needed repairs.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failures and complete required reports.
- Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
- Supervise students while boarding, leaving, and crossing the street.
- Communicate with teachers and parents regarding student behavior on bus.
- Maintain discipline and report discipline problems to administrator.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations.
- Inspect bus before driving (fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, steering).
- Ensure emergency equipment (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, reflector) is in proper condition.
- Report hazardous conditions.
- Practice safety techniques and perform emergency evacuation of students.
- Operate two‑way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Attend and complete required training programs to maintain safety certification.
- Keep records on bus mileage, gas, oil consumption, and passengers transported.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to heat and humidity.
- Excessive noise intermittent.
- Dust, fumes, smoke.
- Unusual fatigue from long driving hours.
