Job Information

Title: Senior Bus Driver

Class: Part Time

Department: Civic Center

Location: 1419 S Houston Ave.

Reports To: Senior Activity Center Coordinator

Work Hours: Wednesdays & Thursdays 7:30am-4:30pm (less than 29 hrs. per week, less than 999 hrs. per year)

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt

Position Summary

Under direct supervision, this position operates the Senior Activity Center Bus within city limits, providing safe and reliable transportation for residents of the City of Humble ages 55 and older. Duties include scheduling, transporting passengers to and from destinations, assisting riders as needed, and maintaining vehicle cleanliness, safety, and readiness.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Operate the multi‑passenger van or bus, transporting passengers to and from designated areas.
  • Prepare and coordinate daily transportation routes, ensuring timely and efficient service while communicating schedules and rider needs to the Senior Activity Coordinator.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Assist senior passengers with safely boarding and exiting the bus, including loading and unloading groceries and operating wheelchair lifts.
  • Ensure all passengers wear seat belts as required.
  • Take responsibility for the safety and well‑being of all passengers during transport.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Complete daily written reports, including transportation logs and pre‑trip inspection reports, noting passenger counts, mileage, and any issues.
  • Ensure the bus is cleaned, fueled, and ready for use at the end of each day.
  • Attend staff and training meetings and/or complete required online training.
  • Assist in Senior Center functions as needed.
  • Report needed repairs or maintenance to the Senior Activity Coordinator promptly.
  • Answer incoming phone calls, schedule rides, and respond to transportation‑related inquiries.
  • Provide information regarding Senior Activity Center programs and schedules.
  • Be available for occasional evenings or weekends to assist with day trips and special events.
  • Perform all job functions in a safe and timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Friendly, patient, and caring attitude toward senior citizens.
  • Clerical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relations with senior citizens, the public, and staff members.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; able to convey information clearly and courteously.
  • Ability to operate and maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Good driving record.
  • Knowledge of driving safety practices, traffic laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to drive a bus for extended periods and under all driving conditions.
  • Wear City‑provided uniform at all times.
  • Good verbal communication skills and professional phone etiquette.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Complete a driver safety course within 1 year of employment.
  • Successfully pass a background check, physical exam, and drug screen.
  • Knowledge of City of Humble’s street layout and geographic areas.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of senior citizens.
  • Ability to work well with public and staff members.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and confined spaces.
  • Bilingual – Spanish language proficiency is preferred.
  • Experience working with senior citizens is preferred.
  • Experience driving a van or passenger bus is preferred.

    Required education, experience, knowledge, and skills must be clearly stated on the application’s employment history.
Physical Demands / Working Conditions
  • Sitting for 8 hours, walking, talking, hearing, reaching, and using hands for handling objects or controls.
  • Assisting passengers, including lifting and securing wheelchairs.
  • Work performed both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
  • Operating a motor vehicle in all weather conditions.
  • Regularly lift and/or move at least 50+ pounds.

* This position is subject to the City of Humble’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy that includes pre‑employment testing, post‑accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow‑up testing.
