Position InformationTxDOT's Houston District is looking for independent and capable crew members to staff the Harris County Night Crew. Crew members will be filling the exciting role of responding to overnight emergencies throughout the county, working to keep roadways safe and open for the traveling public. The Harris County Night Crew will also ensure that overnight maintenance projects are properly delivered to keep Houston roads open.
The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right to determine the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

ResponsibilitiesPerforms routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
- Assist in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform basic welding as needed; use or move equipment, tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assist in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assist stranded motorists as required.
- Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades; flag traffic.
- Determine placement of traffic control devices and install or move devices.
- Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
