Primary Purpose

Ensure safe, efficient and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated location.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class

    B) with an endorsement, and all other required licenses, permits, and certificates. Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Acceptable driving record as determined by the Texas Department of Public Safety and by SBISD as well as any other local, state and federal requirements. Complete and pass the Texas School Bus Driver’s Course, allied courses and examinations. Eligible for coverage under the district’s vehicle insurance program.
  • Certification of good health as required by the State of Texas and signed by a licensed physician. Ability to pass department physical dexterity test. Must have an interest in the education and welfare of children.
  • Must be 18 years and older.
Special Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug tests on pre‑employment, random, post‑accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis.
  • Complete required bus driver safety training and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Read, write and perform basic mathematical skills including the ability to read and interpret routes and maps, and complete assigned forms and reports. Communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedure; manage student behavior and evacuate bus safely.
  • Operate bus and climb in and out of the emergency door.
Major Duties and Responsibilities Vehicle Operation
  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify Fleet Manager of needed repairs.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
Student Management
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents regarding student behavior while on bus.
  • Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
Safety
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure safe operation before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher and reflectors.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and inform supervisor.
  • Report hazardous conditions along the route.
  • Practice safety techniques in lifting, climbing and performing other job duties.
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus if needed.
Other Duties
  • Operate two‑way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
