Position Title: ESL Teacher

FLSA: Exempt

Reports To: Director of Adult and Alternative Education

Updated: April ‘26

Schedule: July '26 – April '27 (10 hours per week: 6 hours in‑person instruction 5:00 PM–8:00 PM Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept–Apr; 4 hours weekly preparation, July–Aug)

Salary/Benefits: $30–$35 per hour (based on experience)

Position Summary

Livingston ESA Adult Ed Lab is seeking a dedicated ESL instructor to support a student in the Adult Education program for the academic year 2026‑2027. The role requires 10 hours weekly, including 6 hours of in‑person instruction and 4 hours of preparation. Compensation is $30–$35 per hour, depending on experience. This position offers an opportunity to provide personalized, high‑quality language instruction while adapting to the official school calendar.

Job Duties
  • Support students in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Implement a comprehensive assessment system (formative, interim, and summative) to monitor student achievement and guide instruction.
  • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Work with newcomers and learn about students’ backgrounds and culture.
  • Meet the language support needs of EL students through lessons centered on Common Core/WIDA standards.
  • Deliver instruction in synchronous and asynchronous formats, demonstrating proficiency with learning management systems.
Qualifications
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with an appropriate elementary, middle, or secondary endorsement in English/language arts, ESL, or bilingual education.
  • Competency in student management and supervision (may not be necessary for individual sessions).
  • Ability to provide personal transportation.
  • Knowledge of SIOP and cooperative learning strategies.
  • Minimum of 1 year of teaching experience.
Other Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities (Required)
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to remain confidential when exposed to sensitive information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and demonstrate flexibility.
Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions and to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standard situations.

Physical Demands

Regularly sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment

Noise level is usually loud and at an acceptable standard for this environment. The employee is directly responsible for student safety, work output, and well‑being.
