SUMMARYThe Technician Mentor assists, supports, and works closely with the Building Trades Teacher to enhance the professional and efficient operation of the program so that the maximum positive impact on the education of students can be realized.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Supporting instruction via tutoring and supervision of individual students or small groups of students.
- Assisting with classroom management and monitoring of student behavior.
- Preparing classroom materials, projects, demonstrations, and visual displays.
- Monitoring and scoring tests and class assignments.
- Operating various construction equipment and performing general housekeeping duties.
- Maintaining regular, predictable attendance.
- Performing other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESSupervision of students depending upon assignment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- High school diploma (or equivalent); and must meet one of the following requirements:
- Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours);
- Obtain an Associate’s Degree (or higher); or
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
- Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing and mathematics; or
- Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
- The State Board of Education has approved the following formal assessments by which a paraprofessional may choose to demonstrate this knowledge:
- ETS Para Pro Assessment – a passing score of 460 is required.
- Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Basic Skills (MTTC) – a passing score on the Basic Skills Test is required.
- SAT – scores:
Evidence-based Reading & Writing 480, Mathematics 530. - ACT – scores:
Reading 22, Combined English/Writing 22, Mathematics 22. - Michigan Merit Examination (MME) – scores:
Reading 1108, Writing 1129, Mathematics 1116. - Work Keys – scores:
Reading for Information (Level 4 minimum), Applied Mathematics (Level 4 minimum), Writing (Level 3 minimum). - Five years recent and relevant experience in construction; a general contractor's license or a specialty area contractor’s license.
- Interest in pursuing teacher certification; experience in teaching through involvement with apprenticeship, professional development, or employer-provided instruction.
- Demonstrated success working with high school age students through coaching, community service, or community organizations.
- Demonstrable relationships with suppliers and specialty tradesmen; ability to manage a construction project from conception through final inspections including all aspects of the project.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, students, staff, and the general public consistent with the duties of this position.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.
- Must have phone skills and communicate with people over the phone.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of this position.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
