Special Education Paraprofessional – Three Fires Elementary
Position Title: Special Education Paraprofessional (Special Needs Aide)
Reports To: Principal / Assistant Principal
Location: Three Fires Elementary School, Howell, Michigan
Days/
Hours:
Monday – Friday (29.5 hours/week). The daily schedule will be set according to student needs.
Position Status: 10‑month employment, student days.
SummaryA Special Education Paraprofessional provides academic, social, and/or behavior support to students with special education needs in order to enhance their success within the general education setting. Support may be provided individually or within small groups.
Essential Functions- Support student achievement within the general/special education classroom.
- Assist in monitoring and implementing behavior intervention plans.
- Monitor student performance to ensure assignments are completed correctly and timely.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with parents and staff.
- Adapt or modify classroom materials, per teacher direction, to be accessible to students with special needs.
- Assist students with individual needs such as navigating hallways and toileting.
- Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information.
- Participate in in‑service training as approved.
- Maintain regular, predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One of the following: two years of higher‑education study (60 semester hours), Associate’s degree or higher, or a rigorous academic assessment demonstrating knowledge in reading, writing, mathematics, reading readiness, or mathematics readiness.
- Proficiency in oral and written English.
- Basic computer skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, grammatical, spelling, punctuation, problem‑solving, and detail orientation.
- Professional demeanor and ability to develop effective relationships with students, parents, teachers, and staff.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple demands, and perform duties with minimal supervision.
- High school diploma or equivalent and must meet one of the following: two years of higher‑education study (60 semester hours), Associate’s degree or higher, or satisfy a rigorous academic assessment.
- Accepted assessments: ETS Para Pro Assessment (passing score 460), Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Basic Skills, SAT (Reading 480, Math 530), ACT (Reading 22, Combined English/Writing 22, Math 22), Michigan Merit Examination (Reading 1108, Writing 1129, Math 1116), Work Keys (Reading Info Level 4, Applied Math Level 4, Writing Level
3).
The employee must coordinate hands, eyes, and feet, stand, walk, lift up to 50 lbs, and use a computer keyboard and phone. Light to moderate physical effort and occasional outdoor work may be required.
Environmental AdaptabilityWork environment is moderately quiet indoors with controlled climate; occasional outdoor activity in varying weather may be required.
