POSITION SUMMARY
The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing a multisensory instructional program that will give students with disabilities the opportunity to engage in core literacy instruction through social, adapted and recreational activities. This individual also will work collaboratively with special education teacher and ancillary providers (i.e., Physical Therapist) to develop personalized plans or routines to support students throughout the educational experience.

- Provides consultation to administrators, instructional staff, students, and families.
- Provides direct instruction in recreational activities and literacy.
- Create multisensory activities that support student advancement within a comprehensive literacy framework.
- Provides ongoing and periodic evaluation of student progress towards IEP goals and objectives in collaboration with the IEP team.
- Develop and maintain an appropriate record keeping system.
- Consultation with local district physical education teachers on adaptive techniques and plans to utilize for students with adaptive physical education needs.
- Develop and maintain an appropriate relationship with parents and inform them of the student’s progress as necessary.
- Obtains, integrates, and interprets information regarding a student’s physical well-being and the supports necessary for success in school and life, and the planning and managing of adaptive programming.
- Coordinate and facilitate the creation of any guidelines and procedures necessary to support effective, research-based adaptive programming supporting literacy practices across the county.
- Engage in regular professional learning opportunities to stay abreast of current evidence-based practices
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written and oral communication with administrators, staff, parents/guardians, and community agencies.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
- Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, families, school personnel, community agencies.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Lead and grow established Unified Sports opportunities for students with disabilities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- May supervise students.
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE
- Master’s and/or bachelor’s degree in field of education.
- Experience teaching and/or working with students with diverse physical and cognitive needs ages 3-26.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with endorsement in Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (SP).
- Candidates preferred with special education endorsements in CI and/or ASD.
