SUMMARY : A Special Education Paraprofessional provides academic, social, and/or behavior support to students with special education needs in order to enhance their success within the general education setting. Support may be provided individually or within small groups.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Support student achievement within the general/special education classroom.
- Assist in the monitoring and implementation of behavior intervention plans.
- Monitor student performance to ensure assignments are being completed correctly and in a timely manner.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with parents and staff within the school building.
- Adapting/modifying classroom materials, per teacher direction, accessible to students with special needs.
- May assist with individual student needs such as navigating the hallways and toileting.
- Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in the school environment and the community.
- Participates in in-service training programs as approved.
- Regularly, predictable attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS :

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
- High school diploma (or equivalent) and must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours).
- Obtain an Associate’s Degree (or higher).
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
- Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness and mathematics readiness.
- Passing scores on one of the following assessments:
- ETS Para Pro Assessment (passing score of 460).
- Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Basic Skills (MTTC).
- SAT (taken on or after March 5, 2016) – Evidence-based Reading & Writing 480, Mathematics 530.
- ACT (taken between January 1, 1989 and October 1, 2017) – Reading 22, Combined English/Writing 22, Mathematics 22.
- Michigan Merit Examination (MME) (taken between January 1, 2007 and January 31, 2015) – Reading 1108, Writing 1129, Mathematics 1116.
- Work Keys (taken before June 1, 2017) – Reading for Information (Level 4 minimum), Applied Mathematics (Level 4 minimum), Writing (Level 3 minimum).
