- Friday; 32.5 hours/week (daily schedule determined by student needs)

SUMMARY : A Special Education Paraprofessional provides academic, social, and/or behavior support to students with special education needs in order to enhance their success within the general education setting. Support may be provided individually or within small groups.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Support student achievement within the general/special education classroom.
  • Assist in the monitoring and implementation of behavior intervention plans.
  • Monitor student performance to ensure assignments are being completed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with parents and staff within the school building.
  • Adapting/modifying classroom materials, per teacher direction, accessible to students with special needs.
  • May assist with individual student needs such as navigating the hallways and toileting.
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in the school environment and the community.
  • Participates in in-service training programs as approved.
  • Regularly, predictable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS :

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :
None.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and must meet at least one of the following requirements:
  • Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours).
  • Obtain an Associate’s Degree (or higher).
  • Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
    • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
    • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness and mathematics readiness.
    • Passing scores on one of the following assessments:
      • ETS Para Pro Assessment (passing score of 460).
      • Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Basic Skills (MTTC).
      • SAT (taken on or after March 5, 2016) – Evidence-based Reading & Writing 480, Mathematics 530.
      • ACT (taken between January 1, 1989 and October 1, 2017) – Reading 22, Combined English/Writing 22, Mathematics 22.
      • Michigan Merit Examination (MME) (taken between January 1, 2007 and January 31, 2015) – Reading 1108, Writing 1129, Mathematics 1116.
      • Work Keys (taken before June 1, 2017) – Reading for Information (Level 4 minimum), Applied Mathematics (Level 4 minimum), Writing (Level 3 minimum).
