Position Title: School Bus Driver Trainer FSLA: Exempt

Reports To: Transportation Supervisor Updated: May, 2026

Salary/Benefits: $1 per hour added to regular rate of pay Schedule: 10-month

Position Summary

In addition to performing all duties of a school bus driver, the trainer will have the following responsibilities:

Responsible for recruitment, training, and development of school bus drivers to ensure safe, compliant, and effective student transportation services.

Provides comprehensive instruction to new and existing drivers in preparation for successful completion of the CDL requirements, including vehicle inspection, basic skills, and on‑road driving.

Supports student behavior management on transportation routes, promotes adherence to state and federal regulations, and ensures alignment with district policies, procedures, and safety standards.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, a successful School Bus Trainer demonstrates leadership and role model behavior by mentoring staff, reinforcing best practices, and promoting compliance with all policies and regulations.

Essential Functions
  • Must schedule training time and road test appointment for new drivers.
  • Must document trainees’ progress and keep supervisor of transportation informed of progress.
  • Review and update training materials.
  • Maintain new trainees’ files.
  • Answer questions for all drivers regarding laws, safety and school bus driving issues in the absence of the supervisor of transportation.
  • Observe and evaluate the skills of current drivers through ride‑along/check rides to ensure continued competency and safety.
  • Serve on the Accident Review Committee.
  • Participate in on‑site training.
  • Participate in recruiting activities for new employees.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ability to communicate positively with all staff members. Must have strong leadership skills. Thorough knowledge of laws, regulations, department procedures and district policy concerning the transportation of students. Must have current necessary certifications to be a school bus driver.

Education

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working as a school bus driver (1 year within the Agency)
  • Demonstrated leadership and serves as a positive role model through professional conduct and decision‑making.
Other Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to remain confidential when exposed to sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a professional role model and mentor, exhibiting the highest standards of safety, compliance, and conduct.
Preferred
  • Working knowledge of LESA/Local district transportation operations, policies and procedures.
  • Proficient computer skills to improve efficiency, maintain accurate records, and support data‑driven decision‑making.
Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently will reach above the head and forward. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp equipment or students.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push or pull up to 90 pounds such as students or students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.
