Position: Administrative Officer to the Planning & Zoning Board

Overview

Howell Township is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented professional to serve as the Planning & Zoning Board Administrative Coordinator within the Department of Community Development. This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the administrative support services provided to the Planning and Zoning Boards in matters relating to land use applications, variances, approvals, and overall Board operations. Working under supervision, the successful candidate will exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative while assisting applicants with planning and zoning requirements, reviewing applications for completeness, coordinating distribution of applications to Board professionals and internal departments, and responding to inquiries from residents, attorneys, developers, and Township officials.

Responsibilities

The position also includes preparing meeting agendas, public notices, resolutions, and meeting minutes; attending all Planning and Zoning Board meetings and serving as Board Clerk during meetings; maintaining escrow account records and coordinating escrow releases; preparing reports, budgets, and purchase orders; coordinating meeting setup and recording equipment; and performing all filing, records management, and general clerical duties required for the Boards.

Evening attendance at Planning and Zoning Board meetings is required.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should possess an Associate’s Degree or higher in Business Administration, Planning, Engineering, or a related field, along with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in land use, planning, engineering, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of land use laws, zoning regulations, and municipal board procedures;

strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills; and proficiency in Microsoft/Excel. Candidates must be able to work effectively with the public, professionals, and government officials while managing multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation & Schedule

This position is aligned with the TWU bargaining unit and offers a starting annual salary of $68,736 at a grade 26 step 1, along with a comprehensive health benefits package and other applicable benefits. Position is Monday through Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm, in addition to evening meetings as scheduled. Interested candidates must complete an online Township application.
